Great Pictures, ONE SNAG FEATURE

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Hi! I Researched for months before landing back on this Canon Selphy CP 780 printer. If you read enough info on the ink vs dye sublimation, you will find that most net reviews are going with dye for crispness, holding true to color, and longevity. I was nervous to try this method,as been an ink jetter for so long, but think about it.. dots per square inch, versus complete ribbon layering coverage.. its amazing to watch this thing print. My main focus was wanting CLEAR crisp quality in my photos. I did not want my children’s cute summer tan photos, to have their skin look pale.. I wanted true color, and got it. From opening the box to set up, to a print in my hand was like 4 minutes.

I LOVE the way the prints look… HOWEVER>>>>>>>>>>

the Canon Selphy cp780, has 2 types of print settings. WITHOUT a border, which prints a true 4×6 print, or with a border, which modifies the print to a 3×5, and a nice white border around the pboto.

IF YOU HAVE YOUR SUBJECTS HEAD TOO CLOSE TO THE TOP OF THE PHOTO, AND THEY ARE NOT TOTALLY CENTERED (WHICH WITH KIDS, ITS IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME ON ACTION SHOTS) THE 4X6 SIZE PRINT WILL CUT OFF THE HEAD, AND NOT PRINT TRUE TO WHAT YOU SEE IN THE VIEWING BOX.

I spent much time speaking with CANON about this setting, and they offer no trim settings, other than what I mentioned with the border, thus forcing me to send back my wonderful (otherwise) selphy.

It will be missed, but not for a large amount of photos that are really 3×5 not 4×6 size. It was simply cutting out too much of some pictures..

so bye bye canon.. Not sure what else I will find.. but surely will stick to dye sublimation print quality.

This Printer is Great For Portability

Because I didn’t want to dish out the overpriced dollars for the Canon iP100, I looked for something on a smaller priced scale. I did minimal research because I knew I wanted a Canon.

The latest Canon CP780 does the job it’s advertised. My printed photos are rich and colorful. One minute print times are okay, and the paper/ink sets (sold separately) fully coincide with the printer. I haven’t had any snags or stuck papers. The printer doesn’t take up any space at all in my living space.

A couple of complaints. I agree with other reviewers about some of my photos having cut off heads during printing. It’s only a few photos I’ve had a problem with, but it’s not great.

The other issue is the 4×6 photo size. I would love to have the option to print on 3×2 to make for an even more intimate photo collection. Currently, when my photos come up, I have to tweak the settings to print them on half a sheet. Now I have about 50 half sheets of unused photos! And no, you cannot use the other half of the photo for a different picture. It would be nice to have various sample sizes of paper (and cassettes) included in the box.

One more thing is it would be nice to have a battery and bluetooth included. With current technology the way it is, the assumed portability of this printer, I should be able to open the box and start printing without going through the hassle of finding a plug, hooking it up, etc. That’s why it’s considered portable. I would pay an extra $20 for this printer if those items were included. My opinion.

A note on customer service: My printer for some reason didn’t come with the sample 5-sheet print pack, so instead of me sending the printer back, Amazon refunded me a small percentage. I love their customer service!

Big WOW factor for a 4×6 printer

I’ve been a professional photographer (photojournalist and wildflower photographer) for more than 20 years, and was looking for a small format printer to just work up 4×6 prints of everyday life.

Having worked in a photo lab many years ago I can be quite picky about my photo processing. I am VERY impressed with the quality and speed of this printer.

I was printing instantly out of the box and directly off a memory card. Needless to say, I quickly ran through the sample ink and paper and was looking for more! Luckily I had ordered a full-size replacement when I ordered the printer. This is a fun and easy to use unit and I love the small size.

The quality of the prints is outstanding – bright and nicely saturated, although a couple could have used tweaking via Photoshop (but in these cases the exposure was a bit off) – certainly nothing to blame on the printer. I can’t wait to try a photo run through the computer and worked-up in Photoshop.

The bottom line – these prints are much better than anything I’ve gotten from a quickie lab. LOVE IT!

Beautiful pictures, but poor value

The photos printed on this paper look really great. They look just as good as something I would have done professionally for a standard 4×6. However, the amount of toner in these cartridges doesn’t appear to be anywhere near what they are promising. I got the printer for Christmas (it comes with a cartridge), along with this ink/paper replacement pack. I have printed exactly 102 photos, and have gone through both the starter ink cartridge that came with the printer, as well as the replacement ink cartridge. Now I am left with about fifty pieces of paper and no way to print on them. I am not printing anything unusual (just a bunch of photos of our kids), nor were the photos taken at a very high resolution (5M – not sure if that matters).

So, that would make the cost of printing each photo about $0.38-.40/each, and that doesn’t include the cost of the printer itself! I love the convenience of being able to easily print photos at home, but it comes at a high price when you can get it done online or at a local retailer’s for $0.12-.20/print. I guess that’s why they can afford to charge so little for the printer.

Quick follow-up as of 9/7/08:

I let the printer sit for a few months – just hadn’t had time to print anything lately. When I tried to print some photos yesterday, the color looked awful and there were banded lines on it. So I put in a new cartridge, but the photos still looked bad. The troubleshooting guide recommended cleaning the heads 2-3 times. I cleaned the head 8 times per the instructions, and it did look better, but still had the lines. The instructions say:

“If repeated cleanings don’t help, you can also turn the Epson Stylus off and wait at least six hours or overnight (this allows any dried ink to soften).”

I let the printer sit overnight, and did another head cleaning this morning. The quality still wasn’t back to normal, so I tried another head cleaning…at which point I got an error message that the ink level was low, and that you can’t clean the heads with low ink! Mind you, this was a brand new cartridge, and I hadn’t even printed any photos on it, just did several cleanings. Since I couldn’t clean the heads, I just started printing pictures. The first several came out with the lines, but after that they looked pretty good.

Anyway, I still like the photo quality and the convenience. But I probably blew through $10 worth of ink cleaning the heads. So, my advice to you is if you buy this printer, try to print to it fairly often so the print heads stay clean and not gunked up.

I like it – I like it

After getting a headache with an HP scanner that we bought, returned, we ended up shopping once again for a scanner that would handle the photos, slides and negatives that I have.

This is the scanner. Honest. It was easy to load, and I was working with the scanner within a half hour testing the basic full scan mode, which I love. I started reading other reviews after we bought this scanner and kept it in mind when I was going to start all of my projects.

I will be savings LOTS and LOTS of money by doing my own scanning with this Epson scanner. I was taking my negatives into a professional lab to have put on CD – now I can do that myself. I don’t need to use any of the advanced features as I like to use Photoshop Elements to correct any flaws, coloring, scratches.

It honestly did not take that long to scan from the negatives and/or slides. I wish you could scan more than 4 slides at a time, but that is fine. I like how you can just “drop” in the slides into the holder and then just pick up from the sides – never having to touch the glass or the slide itself. The negative holder could have been done a little better, but it is very doable.

The scans themselves are really good and decent. When I fixed my first photo from a negative scan it was unbelievable. I had to fix the normal dust and scratch marks in Elements, but it didn’t really take that long and I enjoy working with that program.

Am I happy customer – YES, very happy!!!!!! I am an amateur photographer who loves taking pictures – thousands every year and this scanner will become one of my favorite pieces of computer equipment to be using as I still have thousands of negatives and hundreds of slides that I want to scan in…I think I will be kept busy for a while.

The only other thing that I didn’t like is that each time you want to do a new scan you have to go back into the scan program instead of it just waiting for the next scan – which I can live with. I like how you can change settings for each individual scan also if you would like.

A+++++ all the way for me on this scanner. HP could look at this scanner and improve on theirs – and I used to be a dedicated HP computer person…..
